Last night, John Carmack, the Director of the Perpetual Education Fund (PEF) for the LDS Church, spoke at a fireside in the Lubbock Stake Center (he is coming to the law school today as a representative of the J. Reuben Clark Society). He gave some interesting facts that you might like to know:
- Currently, 28,500 students benefit from the PEF
- PEF operates in over 40 countries. It started in 3 countries six years ago.
- Contributions amount to over $2,000,000 per month! The principal is not even touched to loan the money; they just reallocate the part of the interest they earn off the loans.
- Over 40 senior couples serve as PEF representatives around the world.
- In some countries, up to 90% of the debtors repay their loan; in other countries, it is as low as 45%.
- The majority of debtors find jobs after graduation and earn at least 4 times the amount of income had they not gone to school.
Well, in case you were wondering, there is your PEF update...

I am a strong advocate of education. In my own life I have seen people's circumstance rise with just hte hope of a good education. After listening to the facts, I am even more convinced of the worth of the PEF. It provides the beneficiaries with not only better money, but they also end up being the leaders in their wards and stakes. (marissa)
whenever all "the" is typed "hte", you know it's a Marissa-post.
Hey Steve, enjoyed your comments. Elder Carmack came to speak at our stake conference while we lived in Greenville. We met him after the adult session. He was from the same area that Ben was serving in at that time. He seemed like a great guy. By the way, Mitt is actually ahead, by a small percentage in the So. Carolina Primary race. Who'd a thunk it. Is it just me or is the mainstream media not taking him seriously? All you hear about is Rudy. They think it would probably bring in more ratings to have a Rudy-Clinton race due to their past history running against each other in NY, etc. More like a soap opera. Bye for now, Love, Mom
As grandpa would put it, "the media ain't worth a piece of hammered horse s*%t!"
The PEF is amazing and so obviously inspired!
