Word of Wisdom, Health, and Cancer

(Post by Marissa) So I was reading a few articles today about cancer and health. Interestingly the Word of Wisdom has come to the rescue again. I remember when the Surgeon General came out and said the dangers of smoking several years ago. It was so rewarding to know we received that knowledge years ago..the world can be a little slow sometimes. I mean did we really think puffing something into our lungs could be healthy? I think this is going to continue to happen more and more with other things where right now we don't necessarily know why we do/do not do things, but we will eventually or at least our kids will. Science probably will eventually catch up with all of the things we already know. One thing I do know is there is wisdom in all of the counsel. It is not random by any means.
So about the things I learned today. Of course, the prophets counsel has been proven true by science. This time with causes of cancer.

From Article:
"They are that processed meats, such as ham and bacon, increase the risk of colorectal cancer, and should be eaten sparingly. Another is the link between red meat and colorectal cancer, for which the evidence is stronger than ever. People should not eat more than 500g (17 ounces) of cooked red meat a week.
A further finding was the strongest evidence yet that alcohol is a cause of cancer. If people must drink, the report said, they should limit their intake to two units a day for a man or one for a woman. A unit is a half pint of beer or a small glass of wine."

D&C 89:
And, again, strong drinks are not for the belly, but for the washing of your bodies.
Yea,
flesh also of beasts and of the fowls of the air, I, the Lord, have ordained for the use of man with thanksgiving; nevertheless they are to be used sparingly;
And it is pleasing unto me that they should not be
used, only in times of winter, or of cold, or famine.

Some More Info (not related to Word of Wisdom though)
The report recommended mothers breast-feed exclusively for the first six months after birth followed by complementary breast-feeding, after evidence showed breast-feeding protects the mother against breast cancer.
Keeping slim is one of the best ways of preventing cancer, as is avoiding excessive amounts of red meat and wine, a landmark study has revealed. The World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) said the link between body fat and cancer is closer than generally realized. It found convincing evidence of a link to six types of cancer, five more than in its last report, 10 years ago.

So if you are drinking.... STOP, GO vegetarian, if you can breast feed....DO IT (men you are off the hook), and EXERCISE!

I am waiting for studies to come out and say things about hot drinks and caffeine. Anything that keeps me awake for over 24 hours cannot be good for the heart! Until then we will have to rely on faith.

Marissa and Steve--I saw you had a blog on your (Marissa's) facebook page and thought I would check it out. You are too cute and I loved reading about you, your life, and your family. If you are interested in checking it out, we have a blog too. It is not nearly as thought provoking or interesting as yours mostly just pictures and a few thoughts here and there but we would love to have you visit. aaronalita.blogspot.com. Thanks again for your insights.

Oops I mean "the" instead of "hte." It is driving Steve nuts. I guess he is more OCD than me. The last comment was deleted because "the" and "hte" were not in quotations and then that was driving him nuts. Luckily I usually do things on blogs when he is not breathing down my neck as an editor.

I agree with what you have posted. I have seen studies however of the negative effects of going vegetarian. I think the key is to eat it sparingly to enjoy the full benefit that the Lord "ordained" it for. I can see how in excess, like most substances, it can go from beneficial to harmful.

Dry Chicken, Dry cereal and a nice glass of water with chewable ice pretty much sums up their diets. If you go there looking for brakfast, expect 1 silver dollar sized pancake and 1/2 glass of orange juice..if you're lucky, a couple of peices of fruit. Caution;always pack a couple of snickers bars when visiting Steve and Marissa.

It's cool how you put it so scientific. I'm sure something will start showing up on all those energy drinks now. It seems like I see more and more kids drinking them (Like Red Bull and Jolt). It's sad that more people don't know the dangers of that stuff.

This is a great post. I do have to echo Alma's comment though:

From www.lds.opg: "When people purposefully take anything harmful into their bodies, they are not living in harmony with the Word of Wisdom. Illegal drugs can especially destroy those who use them. The abuse of prescription drugs is also destructive spiritually and physically."

"The flesh 'of beasts and of the fowls of the air,' is "to be used sparingly" D&C 89:12-13

My sister and brother-in-law are cattle ranchers and they would be disappointed if I didn't cite D&C 49:

"18 And whoso forbiddeth (IE biddeth) to abstain from meats, that man should not eat the same, is not ordained of God;
19 For, behold, the beasts of the field and the fowls of the air, and that which cometh of the earth, is ordained for the use of man for food and for raiment, and that he might have in abundance.
20 But it is not given that one man should possess that which is above another, wherefore the world lieth in sin.
21 And wo be unto man that sheddeth blood or that wasteth flesh and hath no need."

And I agree with your opinion on the energy drinks. It won't take long for science to realize that these drinks are as bad as coffee.
