Yesterday, we visited a nearby nursery hoping that someone there could help us get a good start on the improvements. We told her we needed to "unweed" our weed-lawn and plant some bushes, flowers, and trees in our front yard. Unfortunately, the lady who helped us appeared just as confused as Marissa and me. The fact is I have never planted a single seed that actually grew, and now Marissa wants to landscape a whole yard!

For all you experienced gardeners out there, what is your answer to these questions: (1) How do you remove weeds from the grass and flowerbed? (2 ) How should we landscape the front flowerbed? (I have included a couple pictures so that you get the full effect.)

Steve, speaking as a person who has had to kill weeds in every region of the country, the best thing to do is get a good fall fertilizer. The thicker the grass the less weeds can grow. Then in the spring you need to use a good fertilizer that has weed control in it. As for the flower bed, it helps to put that sheeting down and then put the mulch on that. It looks good to me, maybe just add some low shrubs along with the flowers. OK, all that advice has worn me out and I need to go lie down now. Love, Mom
I was going to say exactly the same thing your mom said. Matt just went and bought our "winterizer" which is fall fertilizer. I'd definitely add some low shrubs to the flower bed like your mom suggested. Seriously though, the more you "landscape" the more maitenance you can expect. So I'd keep it simple.
oops, I spelled maintenance wrong.
Hey there---nice house!!! Thank goodness I live at Cockroach Way cuz I might have a bug problem, but I don't have to weed. I'm not sure what is worse though :) Any who, I like the blog---way to be. Not to mention, Lubbock, what a BEAUTIFUL city with so much to do and so many places to go-ha ha ha-atleast we've got Abuelos right?!
My suggestion is to support illegal imigration and hire a Mexican...for 20 bucks and a cold drink, they'll have that yard in shape in no time.
